About the Course

This hugely popular Diploma is useful in providing the basic foundation of legal knowledge relevant to working individuals and fresh graduates regardless of whichever field they hail from. The Certificate in Higher Education (Common Law), equivalent to the first year (Intermediate Stage of the Bachelor of Laws, LL.B programme, is awarded by the University of London International programmes upon successful completion of the final examinations held annually on May/June. Holders of this Diploma can proceed directly to the second year (known as Final Part I) of the Bachelor of Laws, LL.B programme.

The Certificate in Higher Education (Common Law) is also today increasingly used as an alternative ( to the A levels) entry qualification to the Bachelor of Laws programme in many universities in the United Kingdom.

This course would interest:

  • Individuals who wish to practice as Lawyers, other than in Singapore (by continuing their studies to complete the LL.B. degree);
  • Court clerks, police officers, legal secretaries who require additional knowledge or qualifications for purposes of career advancements;
  • Individuals with a personal or professional interest in legal and contractual matters; or who have a specific interest such as those in arbitration, human resource and the insurance industry;
  • Individuals motivated by an intellectual interest in law and legal issues, including those interested in pursuing higher degrees in law or other academic areas;

Students intending to practice as lawyers in Singapore who may use the Certificate in Higher Education (Common Law) to proceed to UK universities as full-time students.

*The school will continue to offer the Diploma in Law programme to students who are currently registered under the University of London old regulations. Please do contact the University to check on your registration status.

Course Outline

The programme is conducted over a 6-12 months duration, excluding the intensive revision course and subject to intake commencement. It can be studied either full-time or part-time and consists of four compulsory subjects: Common Law Reasoning & Institutions, Elements of the Law of Contract, Criminal Law and Public Law, leading to examinations held in May/June every year. Students may also opt to do two subjects each year over a period of two years. 

Regular Classes are conducted twice and three times a week on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday . Students who start on earlier intakes will have a paced-out timetable starting with classes twice a week before increasing to three times a week.

In addition, there will be an eight-weeks Intensive Revision Programme held in Mar/Apr to prepare the students for the examinations, during which time classes would be held four times a week, on Saturdays, 2pm-9.30pm; Sundays 10am-5pm; Mondays and Tuesdays 6.30pm-9.30pm.

Special classes / Workshops by University Professors would be held from time to time. There would also be Mock Examinations internally to give our students an opportunity to assess their progress while on the programme. 

Students will also be asked to submit written assignments to their lecturers during the course of study. These are purely intended to monitor the students’ understanding of the subject matter during the course of study and would have no effect on the final examinations conducted by the University of London International Programmes.

Examination Procedure and Award

The Certificate in Higher Education (Common Law) is examined either in whole (1 examination sitting for 4 subjects) or in stages (2 examination sittings for 2 subjects at each sitting).

Examinations are held annually in May/June. The examinations which is set and graded entirely by the Univesity of London (to ensure quality and same standard as College-based students of the University of London) and is conducted in Singapore by RELC (Regional English Language Centre), the exam bureau in Singapore.

Examination format: Students are required to sit for a 3hours and 15minutes unseen written examination for each subject where they are required to answer 4 questions out of 8. Questions may be in the form of essays and problem. 

Upon successful completion of the examinations, the student will be awarded a Certificate in Higher Education (Common Law) from the University of London International Programmes with a Distinction/ Merit/ Credit/ Pass depending on the results achieved.

Course Materials

All students will receive textbooks, subject guides and study packs for the four compulsory subject from the University of London upon payment of the University of London Registration Fees. Access to the virtual learning environment with the University of London will also be provided upon the same payment. Students will also be given user-ids and passwords to access the University’s online learning portal.

ITC will provide 4 folders for ITC lecture notes, 2 introductory text books, a thumb drive with course related material and a note pad in a tote bag upon registration at ITC School of Laws.

During the course of the year, there will be additional materials provided by ITC School of Laws in the form of further lecture notes, additional reading materials and answer guides to exam questions. Students may access our library facilities to refer to other textbooks or law reports. 

All students will also be given a comprehensive revision planner, complete with charts and answer guide, during the Intensive revision programme with ITC.

Entry Requirements

The student must be 18 years and above and demonstrate maturity to cope with the course. Whilst there is no minimum academic requirement, the University of London has appointed and given ITC-School of Laws the discretion to accept students into the programme based on certain guidelines, the general condition being that the student must show his or her ability to study at this level and to attend classes at ITC.

The student should possess at the very least 3 ‘O’ levels to enter into the Diploma in Law programme failing which a test will be administered by ITC School of Laws.
